What do carbon brushes do in a washing machine?

Carbon brushes in a washing machine transfer electrical current from the stationary part (stator) to the rotating part (armature) of the motor. They facilitate the motor's operation, driving the drum's movement during the wash cycle. 

As the armature rotates, the brushes maintain a low-resistance connection and allow electrical power to flow through the motor's windings and generate the necessary magnetic fields.

Why do you replace them?

Carbon brushes need to be replaced when they wear down or become too short. The constant friction and contact with the spinning armature gradually wear out the carbon brushes over time.
