Hotpoint and Indesit Washing Machine Recall Notice

It has been announced today that, due to fire risk, Whirlpool have launched a product recall of certain washing machines under the brands of Hotpoint and Indesit.

Why are they recalling washing machines?

The fault, which is caused by an overheating door lock, affects approximately 20% of Hotpoint and Indesit washing machines sold since 2014, accounting for around 519,000 washing machines. Whirlpool said “When the heating element in the washing machine is activated, in very rare cases a component in the door lock system can overheat, which, depending on product features, can pose a risk of fire” According to Whirlpool the product safety team identified the fault, which has led to fires, although only minor damage had been caused, and no significant injuries.

What should I do if I believe I own an affected washing machine?

The first thing to do is check if the model of your washing machine is affected. Alternatively, a free helpline has been setup by Whirlpool, 0800 316 1442.

If you have an affected washing machine the the advice from Whirlpool is to unplug the appliance and not use it.

However, if you do decide to use an affected washing machine then you should only use cold water cycles of 20C or lower as this significantly reduces the risk. This is because the issue is associated with the washing machine’s heating element being activated during washing cycles above 20C.

When will my affected washing machine be fixed or replaced?

The recall campaign will commence in January and customers will be offered the following choice:

  1. A free-of-charge like-for-like replacement washing machine.
  2. A free-of-charge in-home repair of their existing washing machine.
