The water inlet valve on a washing machine controls how much water gets into the machine at different times during the wash cycle. The washer's electronic control board or timer regulates when the valve opens and shuts, and it’s typically connected to the home's water supply. 

When the water level reaches the predetermined level, the input valve closes to halt any further water flow and start the washing or rinsing process.
