How To Replace The Door Handle On a Washing Machine

The door handle on a washing machine is essential to the correct functioning of the appliance.  Unless the door is closed properly the washing machine will not start and will need immediate attention.  Fortunately with our video demonstrations below on various brands of washing machine replacing your door handle is a straightforward DIY task.

How To Replace The Door Handle On an Indesit Washing Machine

Hello, I'm Shawn and today I'm going to show you how to change the door handle on this Indesit washing machine.

Before you start please make sure that you've isolated the appliance from the mains.

Most of the time when a door handle breaks it will be in a closed postition.  That's because someone hasn't got the patience to wait for the door lock to open or the handle has got brittle with age, either way you're left with a jammed door.

Normally when you squeeze the handle the latch moves across and the door will open.  When the door handle is broken however the latch will stay in postion and the door will not open.  Therefore we'll take the lid off and manually move the latch across.

The lid is secured by 2 phillips screws.  With the lid off you can see the door interlock and if we move the drum slightly out of the way we can manually move the latch and the door will open.

We now need to remove the door by undoing the screws that are holding the hinge in place.

The door his held together by 6 screws.  We can now separate the door using a small screwdriver.  The door handle can now be removed and replaced.

How To Replace The Door Handle On A Hotpoint Washing Machine

Hi, I’m Shawn and today im going to show you how to replace the door handle on a Hotpoint Washing Machine and Washer Dryer.  Before we start remember to always isolate the appliance before carrying out any repairs.

Quite often when the door handle breaks the door will be in the closed position so you’ll be unable to open the door, so we’ll need to do this manually from inside the machine.

To do this we first need to remove the lid of the washing machine which is held on with 2 Philips screws.  Now we are able to gain access to the pecker which latches the door closed and move it open with a screwdriver.

Now that we have the door open we’re going to remove it from the cabinet by removing the 4 bolts that hold it in place.

Now we can remove the screws that are holding the door together.

Now we can separate the inner and outer door frames from one another.

The door handle has a pin running through it which now needs to be removed.

We can now replace the door handle and refit the pin through the door handle, spring and pecker.  Next we’ll re assemble the door glass and frames and re fit the door to the cabinet.

All that’s left is to check that the door is opening and closing correctly and re fit the lid.
