Bosch Dishwasher Heat Exchanger Outlet Valve

The heat exchanger outlet valve regulates the flow of water out of your Bosch dishwasher's heat exchanger, letting preheated water enter the drum at the right moment in a cycle. If the valve has failed, the most common symptom is an E19 error code. Alongside the usual Torx T20 and flat-head screwdrivers and a pair of work gloves, grab an old towel for this repair — the heat exchanger will very likely be full of water that needs to drain out.

1. Remove the Left Side Panel

The heat exchanger outlet valve is accessed from the left side of the dishwasher, so the left side panel needs to come off first. Undo the Torx T20 screw on the front of the side panel, then lift the panel away from the dishwasher and place it to one side.

2. Locate the Heat Exchanger Outlet Valve

With the side panel off, look for the heat exchanger just by the door hinge. The outlet valve sits on the side of the clear plastic heat exchanger body. If the plastic cover next to the hinge is in the way, unclip it for easier access. Put your work gloves on before going any further — there can be some sharp plastic and metal edges in this area.

3. Disconnect the Wiring and Drain the Heat Exchanger

With a small flat-head screwdriver, unclip the electrical connector at the bottom of the outlet valve by pressing the tab.

Place your towel underneath the outlet valve to catch the water. The valve now needs to be loosened slightly to let air flow into the S-bend and kick off the draining process — rotate it up and slightly out. The heat exchanger will start to drain; it can take up to 30 seconds to empty, so don't worry if it feels slow.

4. Remove the Old Outlet Valve and Unpackage the New One

Once the heat exchanger has drained, fully unclip and remove the old outlet valve from the exchanger.

Unpackage your new heat exchanger outlet valve and check that the rubber O-ring is seated correctly around the body. The new valve has a couple of tabs on each side that slot into matching rear and front slots in the heat exchanger to hold it in place.

5. Fit the New Outlet Valve

Place the new outlet valve into the heat exchanger and focus on clicking it into the rear slots first. Gently push the valve towards the dishwasher and rotate it down (anticlockwise), making sure the back tabs click firmly into place.

To engage the front tabs, push the outlet valve forward until they also click in. Test that it's fully secured by gently trying to pull it back out — unless it's rotated up first, a correctly fitted valve won't come away. Once it's locked in, clip the electrical connector back onto the valve.

6. Refit the Plastic Cover and Side Panel

If you unclipped the plastic cover by the hinge earlier, reattach it now.

To refit the side panel, line up the two slots on the panel with the two small plastic tabs on the bottom of the dishwasher, then pull the panel up to click it into place. Screw the front Torx T20 screw back in to hold it.

And that's it — your new Bosch dishwasher heat exchanger outlet valve is fitted and the E19 error should be cleared. Need more Bosch dishwasher spare parts?
