What do carbon brushes do for your washing machine?
Carbon brushes facilitate electrical contact between the motor and other parts of the washing machine. They give the necessary electrical current to power the motor to rotate and perform various functions during the washing process.
What damages the carbon brush?
Continuous use and friction against the motor's rotating armature cause the brushes to wear down and decrease electrical contact and performance. Excessive heat, dirt, or debris accumulation reduce conductivity and create potential motor malfunction.

Good quality brushes, bit of patience needed to compress the spring to fit but doable. Take the motor off makes it much easier.

Trickier to fit than compatible set bought earlier
These brushes had longer springs of larger diameter and were a challenge to compress into the guide tube. We realized why self-contained screw-on brush units were so popular! After fitting them we wondered how they were inserted during manufacture of Bosch washing machines and if there was a fitting tool to save time. In idle moments afterwards we designed a simple and cheap device to make the process quick and easy. These brushes replaced compatible ones bought from you in June this year and which had worn really quickly. I have photographs comparing the new and these old brushes which had a shorter, smaller diameter spring, but there is no provision to illustrate the review. The washer has been in use most days for many years. As before it was easier to remove the motor and see both brush locations clearly. The video by Lee was very clear though more hints on removing the motor would have been useful as its mounting was unusual.

I gambled and it paid off.
Our old Bosh washing machine decided to stop working the very first month after cancelling the breakdown service agreement. It registered Error 43 and after resetting would not spin. Worn out motor brushes was one of the potential causes and I hoped the most likely cause given its age (9 years). Worth a shot I thought especially after looking at the cost of a new Bosh machine just before Christmas! The brushes were completely worn out but the replacements I ordered were slightly too wide but easily filed down to size. Machine is now back in service and very happy.
