How To Replace The Power Switch On A Lawn Mower

Video transcript:

The on/off switch on a Flymo Lawn mower is constantly being turned on and off during mowing as you press & depress the levers.  For this reason it’s a very common replacement part.  Fortunately fitting a new switch is straightforward.

The first job is to remove the 4 screws that is holding the switch housing together.  You’ll notice that these screws are Torx head screws and so you’ll need a torx head screwdriver.  If you don’t have one then these are available on the Ransom Spares website.

Once the screws are removed we can separate the switch housing.  And that will reveal the switch.

The external orange cable is connected to the switch with 2 x screws, however the internal cable is connected using a push type fitting.  We’ve removed the top of an old switch to demonstrate the way the wires are held in place and think this is the best way to remove the wires from the switch as demonstrated here with an allan key.

So, first we need to reconnect the external cable wires and tighten the screws.

And then we can reconnect the internal cable wires using the push fitting.  First the live and then the neutral.

It’s always a good idea to replace the capacitor, which is also available on the Ransom Spares website.  This uses exactly the same type of push fittings on the switch.  Once in place it should be turned over back on to the switch.

With the switch fitted and back in place we can now re-fit the switch housing to the handle.

Re-tighten the screws.

And that’s it, how to replace the on off switch of a flymo Lawnmower.  This switch and all other flymo spares are available on the ransom spares web site.  Thanks for watching!
