Service Wash? - Cure a Smelly Washing Machine Drum & Remove Limescale Build up

Washing Machine Servce WashWhy do a service wash?

We often get asked the question - is a service wash really necessary? The answer is a resounding YES.

Now more than ever before a regular service wash is something that we highly recommend everyone should do whether you live in a hard or soft water area. The reason is that nowadays we are all washing at much lower temperatures than days gone by and we generally prefer to use non-biological powders and liquids. A combination of these changes in our washing leads to the build up of both limescale and detergent. By performing a regular monthly service wash the build up of both limescale and detergent (which is the cause of a 'smelly washing machine') will be kept at bay greatly increasing the life of your machine.

HarHard Water Aread Water Area?

If you live in a hard water area then your washing machine will be prone to a build up of limescale. Because of the effect limescale has on the internal components of your washing machine such as the heater element, the pump and sump etc. the life of your washing machine will be reduced.

SoftSoft Water Area Water Area - Smelly Washing Machine?

If you live in a soft water area then your washing machine will be prone to a build up of detergent. This will manifest itself as black mould and will affect areas that you can see such as the dispenser drawer, door seal and filter, but also areas that you can’t see such as the inside of the tub, drum and sump; which can often also give off a foul smelling odour.

Instructions - How To Do A Service Wash

A service wash is extremely simple, but extremely effective in curing a smelly washing machine & removing limescale. First of all you will need a good quality Limescale and Detergent remover. We recommend the Indesit Company Professional Home Care Product. You will get 10 sachets in the box which will give you 10 service washes.

  1. Empty the contents of one sachet in to the drum of the washing machine along with 2 bath towels (not your best ones!).

If your washing machine is smelly or a large amount of mould is visible then you can add 2/3 sachets on the first service wash.

  2. Select the hottest wash cycle and turn your machine on.

Do not select a pre-wash as the machine will empty before the main wash.

Another cause can be if your washing machine outlet is plumbed into your sinks drain. Having not used my washer for several days, i noticed a pool of water inside the washer drum (very rank smelling!). I traced this back to when undoing the plug in the sink, the pressure caused by a full bowl of water going down the drain forcing the waste water not only out through the P-trap, but also back along the washing machines outlet pipe into the machine. Obviously this is grease, food waste etc., and this is the water your inital wash cycle is performed in. The answer for me was to remove the outlet hose from the sink drain and give it it's own dedicated pipework to the grid outside. I still perform a service wash to get rid of built up detergent, but I've not suffered with any backflow problems since.

My washing machine had become increasingly smelly over the past few weeks, even immediately after completing a wash.  After looking up your site I tried a few hot washes and guess what!  The smell has gone.

I used non-bio powder and never over 40degrees.

 Many thanks for your help.
